PTA Marathon – Boogie Nights

‘I am star…I am star, I am a star, I am a star…I am a big bright shining star!’

Boogie Nights is entirely defined in the ‘wise’ words of Dirk Diggler. I am sure you have noticed the poster, so the association is not too far off the mark. This movie is something special…

Boogie Nights is the story of a young man’s adventures in the pornography industry of late 70’s and early 80’s. A very young Mark Wahlberg is Eddie Adams, a kid washing dishes in a disco club with no apparent goals is discovered by adult film director Jack Horner and the adventure towards stardom begins.

It is clear from the first scene that this is a much bigger production than PTA’s first film Hard Eight, as a lover of continuous shots, it was easy for me to appreciate the first minutes of Boogie Nights. The movie is two hours and a half of greatness, be warned though it raunchy, it’s rated R it will make you feel uncomfortable at times but it’s good!

Now, for those that continued reading, Burt Reynolds as Jack Horner is excellent, the best way to describe his acting would be magnetic, seducing and just plain awesome. Mark Wahlberg’s performance was not very convincing, at the beginning, but it may have been on purpose as he’s much more boyish before achieving success in the porn industry.

It was intriguing to watch Eddie Adams, a boy with no goals, no ambition, become Dirk Diggler and embrace the ‘not give a damn’ mentality. Dirk Diggler, flies high and is a confident man, but the higher you get the harder you fall!

Boogie Nights is a story about ambition, is a story about the hidden fragility of these characters. Secondary characters are equally important, each with different issues in their lives. While Dirk Diggler is consumed by ambition, funnily enough due to his humongous er… work instrument, others are just trying to get out of the porn business but simply can’t or…trying to make their wife stop sleeping with half of the porn industry. It’s a tough world!

Boogie Nights has the capacity of making you laugh and making you squirm, there are some sad and emotionally effective moments that come when you least expect and these indeed create some amazing scenes. I feel like the soundtrack is a character in itself, the music selection is just excellent.

Boogie Nights is unapologetic, raunchy, naked, shocking, hilarious and a feast for the eyes and ears, basically pure awesomeness!
