Captain Fantastic – Power to the people! Stick it to the man!

Captain Fantastic is a poignant experience. One that makes you smile, one that may steal a tear or two from you. Viggo Mortensen leads an amazing cast of young actors, that immediately conquer your heart.

Mortensen plays an eccentric and gruff man living in the middle of the woods with his children. Children that listen to Bach, hunt and know how to survive in the wild. There is a dark tone present in many scenes. In many occasions the behaviour of this family reminded me of a cult, the strict rules, the rejection of society, the feeling that “we don’t fit in”.

Indeed, Mortensen’s character lifestyle while nurturing in many ways, starts to fall apart, when he is forced to come back to the world of the living with his family. Each son or daughter have distinct personalities, which at times clash with the world they have lived so far.

Captain Fantastic is also sharp in the way it approaches certain themes like religion, education, hell even the obese are not free from criticism. Mortensen is simply a treat for the senses. As usual he brings such an intensity to his performance, that you can’t help but feel for him. His happiness, his sadness, his regret.

Equally captivating is the young army of children behind him. Add to the recipe the gravitas of Frank Langella and a strong performance by Kathryn Hahn, and you got yourself an amazing cast.

Captain Fantastic is easily one of the best movies I have seen this year. An adventure that will make you smile and laugh but it will also squeeze your heart. It’s a movie that stuck with me for a while, I am sure the same will happen with you.

Soundtrack Trivia:

Alex Somers who composed a beautiful soundtrack for Captain Fantastic, is the boyfriend of none other than Jónsi, vocalist and guitar player for Sigur Rós. You can hear Jónsi’s voice in some of the tracks.
